Honoring “Hollywood Shuffle” For Black Movie Month
American Black Film Festival founder Jeff Friday has declared October to be Black Movie Month. At the last ABFF, Robert Townsend and Keenen Ivory Wayans talked about the legacy of their 1987 classic, “Hollywood Shuffle.”
Hollywood Shuffle inspired a generation of filmmakers both through its use of satire and message and also by its do it yourself, independent style of film making.
Closing out Black Movie Month will be the Hollywood Black Film Festival, which will feature “Chicken And Beef Presents: Monkey Gang, The Mockumentary” a movie that was heavily influenced by “Hollywood Shuffle” in its satire and parody of negative stereotypes, as well as its do it yourself style of independent filming.
Here are the creators of “Hollywood Shuffle,” talking to the creators of “Monkey Gang” about independent Black film.
Hollywood Black Film Festival, founded by industry insider, Tanya Kersey, will happen in Los Angeles, California from October 27-30th. For more information on the festival go to www.hbff.org.
