When you think of earthquakes, the West Coast comes to mind. Although there are fault lines all over the country, it’s rare that an earthquake is felt in the South. However, east Tennessee and Georgia got a scary wake up call this morning with some seismic activity.

According to WVLT, it was the strongest earthquake, at a magnitude of 4.4, in east Tennessee since 1973. “The light earthquake occurred Wednesday around 4:14 a.m. about 7 miles (11 kilometers) northeast of Decatur,” the station reported. “About 13 minutes later, a 3.3 magnitude aftershock then struck.”
Thankfully, there were no damages. The Tennessee Valley Authority wrote on Twitter, “TVA facilities are designed to withstand seismic events & were not impacted by Wednesday morning’s earthquake. They continue to safely operate. Personnel are currently conducting further inspections as a precaution. Our top priority remains the safety of the public.”
Back in 2014, The Times Free Press reported that Tennessee “has been placed in the second-most hazardous tier out of seven that the U.S. Geologic Survey’s uses in its national map that is released every six years.”
Again, no one was injured and there isn’t any reported damage, but Twitter certainly had some jokes. Check out some of the most hilarious reactions below:
