Jared Loughner Could Face Death Penalty For Shootings
Arizona — The man accused of the attempted assassination of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was charged Sunday afternoon with federal crimes that could carry the death penalty if he is convicted.
Prosecutors charged Jared Lee Loughner, 22, with five counts — killing federal government employees, attempting to assassinate a member of Congress and attempting to kill federal employees — the day after federal District Court Judge John M. Roll and five others died in a shooting rampage that left Giffords recovering from a bullet wound to the brain.
The court filings paint the picture of a gunman intent on killing Giffords, and the swift movements on the charges indicate that federal authorities are moving to make good on FBI Director Robert Mueller’s promise to ensure that “justice is done.”
