White House And Retailers Promise To Deliver Healthy Foods
First Lady Michelle Obama’s campaign to bring down childhood obesity rates is making headway as several large retailers have agreed to open stores in areas without access to fresh produce and healthy foods.
Company executives from Wal-Mart, Walgreens and Supervalu joined the First Lady at the White House for the announcement, which the White House and retailers estimate will create tens of thousands of jobs and serve more than nine million people.
Studies have shown that limited access to healthy foods, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, can lead to higher levels of obesity and diet-related diseases.
