New Orleans Tackles Public Housing Demand With New Plan
NEW ORLEANS — The city of New Orleans is meeting its subsidized housing demand with a new plan. Instead of crowding families in large subsidized plots, the city is building and mixing subsidized homes among its unsubsidized residences.
The city, which tore down all of its public housing developments in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, has opened 900 homes so far and has plans to build another 3,100 homes for low-income New Orleans residents.
The benefit is that the new developments are in far better condition than previous ones. But some warn that this swift move could make it difficult for residents to find affordable housing.
