Maya Angelou Upset With MLK Memorial Quote
Maya Angelou: Memorial Quote Makes MLK Look “Arrogant”
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Maya Angelou is the latest prominent Black figure to voice reservations with the newly erected Martin Luther King Jr. memorial in Washington D.C.
Angelou, who consulted on the project, has an issue with a quote on the wall by the Tidal Basin of the memorial that reads: “I was a drum major for justice, peace, and righteousness.”
“The line makes Dr. Martin Luther King look like an arrogant twit,” she said.
Angelou, who would like the quote changed, says that “the if” clause that is left out is salient. Leaving it out changes the meaning completely.
