Harlem Fire Sends Raw Sewage Into The Hudson River
HARLEM — New York City may be forced to dump untreated sewage into the Hudson River after a four-alarm fire erupted on Wednesday at a waste treatment plant on 135th street in Harlem.
The fire created a 30-foot plume by noon and burned for three hours, sending employees running out of the plant. Thousands were evacuated from the nearby Riverbank State Park.
Environmental advocates have rallied against the plants presence in Harlem for years. Officials said it would take 48-hours of continuous discharge to affect the water quality of the river.
