Detroit Hears Proposal To Turn 41 Public Schools Into Charters
DETROIT, Michigan — In a bid to eliminate the deficit and prevent massive school closings, Robert Bobb, the emergency financial manager of Detroit Public Schools presented a new plan that seeks to turn 41 schools into charter schools.

The new proposal, dubbed “The Renaissance Plan,” could save the district at least $75 million but critics are skeptical of the effectiveness of the quick-fix.
Charter schools are not usually required to hire unionized teachers. By converting 41 schools to charter schools — roughly 30 percent of Detroit public schools — one of the largest cuts may be in paying teacher tenures and pensions.
The original plan called for closing 40 schools by next year, which could save the district an estimated $28 million.
