In this last of three parts, The One Story takes a closer looks at mass incarceration and the big business of rounding up and detaining undocumented immigrants. Black immigrants, in particular.
Advocacy group Black Alliance for Just Immigration (BAJI) discusses its organizing efforts against the construction of new jails and demands for certain substandard facilities that are rife with corruption to be closed.
Building new jails is “not only morally and fiscally irresponsible, it robs Black and brown communities of much-needed resources in a city where we already feel unwanted,” New York City-based BAJI organizer Albert Saint-Jean told NewsOne.
More than 1 in 5 immigrants facing deportation on criminal grounds who is Black, according to statistics compiled for a 2016 report by BAJI and New York University School of Law. Nearly 9 percent of immigrants in the U.S. identify as Black.
