There have been several studies proving that Black women die from pregnancy at a higher rate than white women. Also, Black women are often ignored by their doctors. According to California Health Report, “Health providers often don’t listen to mothers about their birth preferences and African-American women are the least likely to be listened to.”
This was clearly the case for Kendra Richardson in Ocala, Florida.
According to WESH 2 News, Richardson, who is pregnant, was left alone for so long at her doctor’s appointment—which was at 3 p.m.—that she was locked inside of the clinic. The doctor “gave her a paper gown. She then waited for him to come back, which he never did. At 6 p.m., she said she found herself alone in the doctor’s office, forgotten about and scared.” She is due this month.
She was able to call 911 with the help of a person in a connecting office. WESH 2 News reports, “A police officer was able to get into the doctor’s office through an adjacent suite. Those at the doctor’s office are trying to figure out how Richardson was left and forgotten.”
No one from the clinic has commented on the incident, but this goes in line with how Black pregnant woman are treated. The CDC reports, “Each year in the United States, about 700 women die as a result of pregnancy or delivery issues — while 50,000 experience severe complications.”
