Mayor Andrew Gillum Temporarily Suspends Campaign After Shooting In Tallahassee
Andrew Gillum is set to make history as the first Black man to be governor of Florida on Nov. 6. However, due to a tragedy in Tallahassee, where he is mayor, he is temporarily suspending campaign activity, according to the New York Daily News.

According to WCTV Eyewitness News, an man walked into a yoga studio late Friday afternoon and began shooting. There were several injuries and two dead, who have been identified as as Dr. Nancy Van Vessem, 61, and Maura Binkley, 21. The shooter has been identified as 40-year-old Scott Paul Beierle, according to the Tallahassee Police Department. He reportedly died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Vessem was the chief medical director for Capital Health Plan and released the following statement, “Our Capital Health Plan family is deeply shocked and saddened about the tragic loss of our beloved friend and colleague, Dr. Nancy Van Vessem, among the other victims of this terrible incident.”
The statement continued, “As CHP’s longtime chief medical director, Nancy has been a guiding, visionary force in our daily work to serve the wellness and health care needs of thousands of families in this community. Her dedication, caring, leadership, humanity, and experience made her one of the most respected, inspiring, and accomplished medical professionals in the state and country. Our hearts are filled with sorrow and prayers for her family. We all have been so blessed to have Nancy in our lives.”

Mayor Gillum wrote the following on Twitter, “I’m deeply appreciative of law enforcement’s quick response to the shooting at the yoga facility in Tallahassee today. No act of gun violence is acceptable. I’m in close communication with law enforcement officials and will be returning to Tallahassee tonight.”
