Is Suge Knight Out Here Trying To Buy Witnesses?
Prosecutors are accusing music mogul Suge Knight of attempting to pay witnesses to testify in his murder case. Matt Fletcher, Knight’s lawyer, denies the accusations, the New York Daily News reports:
“Knight — whose real name is Marion Knight – has been in jail 2½ years as he awaits trial for the alleged murder of Carter and attempted murder of Cle “Bone” Sloan.”
Fletcher and Knight are accused of planning to pay witnesses to claim that Knight was assaulted by the two men before he attempted to escape by hitting them with his truck.
Fletcher is suspicious of the loophole that allowed prosecutors to violate attorney-client privilege by recording calls between Knight and himself. Prosecutors claim that conference calls breech this expectation. In both recordings, Knight had a third party merge Fletcher into the call. NY Daily obtained segments of the transcript in which Fletcher allegedly tells Knight, “That’s a fair motherf—ing investment, you know, 20, 25 thousand dollars to pay to these motherf—ers to get home?”
Fletcher says that quote was taken out of context. He and Knight were not try to buy witnesses; they were considering paying bikers for the videos they took of the incident in question. Knight had hoped that these videos would help exonerate him.
The News reports that prosecutors have asked for an “inquiry” into Fletcher, hoping to intercept any future appeal based on the lawyer’s alleged misconduct. Fletcher denies any wrongdoing.
