Congress Rescinds Obama-Era School Accountability Policy
In a further effort to undo Obama-era education policies, President Donald Trump is expected to sign into law a measure that rescinds accountability rules intended to help states implement the 2015 Every Student Succeeds Act, Fox News reports.
By the narrowest of margins, 50-49, the Senate voted on March 9 to undo a policy issued in November 2016 that addresses school ratings, student report cards and other ways to identify and fix troubled schools.
“This resolution restores flexibility, this resolution preserves local decision-making, this resolution scuttles new and burdensome reporting requirements. This resolution ensures strong accountability for our schools, but it is state accountability,” said Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), who chairs the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, according to the Associated Press.
Those who supported the Obama policy said it provided important safeguards for vulnerable groups of students, such as children with special needs and minorities.
