False Report Of Segregated Cal State L.A. Dorm
Reports Of Segregated Student Housing At Cal State Los Angeles Are False
Don’t believe the stories about a “Blacks only” dorm at California State University Los Angeles, The New York Times reports.
According to the publication, The College Fix ignited a firestorm when it reported on Tuesday that the college opened a racially segregated dorm for African-American students.

The conservative higher-education news outlet said the decision stemmed from demands issued by the university’s Black Student Union, which sought a safe haven for African-American students who face frequent racist attacks.
However, the story was—at best—an unintentional misunderstanding.
The Los Angeles Times explained on Wednesday that there is, indeed, dorm space for 24 students interested in issues concerning the Black community.
“This community is open to all students. This living-learning community focuses on academic excellence and learning experiences that are inclusive and non-discriminatory,” Cal State spokesman Robert Lopez told the Los Angeles Times.
Lopez added that the school offers four themed living communities, including first-year, honors, and gender-neutral housing.
According to the New York Times, university officials and Black student leaders said themed housing is not segregationist and should not be described that way. U.C. Riverside School of Education Associate Professor Eddie Comeaux said these living arrangements have been a useful to tool for three decades.
Moreover, several California universities—including U.C. Davis, Stanford, and U.C. Berkeley—offer themed housing.
