School suspensions are the most expedient, but not the most effective way to deal with disruptive students, according to former dean Tyler E. Brewster.
She learned that lesson when one of her students told her that he began to act like a troublemaker because he was treated like one. Brewster, who is now a restorative justice coordinator, realized she contributed to the student’s attitude by pushing him out of the school community. Her new job is to keep kids in school while helping them to learn accountability and responsibility.
