Possible Arson At Home Of Cop Who Killed Walter Scott

Just days after Michael Slager, the former South Carolina police officer charged in the death of Walter Scott, was released from jail on bond, police are investigating a possible arson at the home where he previously lived.

According to ABC News, authorities with the Hanahan Police Department are investigating whether an arsonist set the fire, which was put out before firefighters arrived Friday.

Police said Slager, a former police officer in North Charleston, South Carolina, who is charged in the shooting death of Walter Scott, had rented the home. He moved out after he was arrested in April 2015, police said.

Police are looking for a suspicious person seen leaving the area before the fire was reported. The investigation is “in its early stages,” police said.

His attorney, Cameron Blazer, told ABC News today in a statement, “While the events of last night are unsettling, the arson appears to be an isolated incident.”

It is unclear where Slager currently lives. He was charged in the death of Scott, an unarmed Black man, after cellphone video captured him shooting the fleeing man eight times and dropping what appeared to be a Taser near the man’s lifeless body.

The shooting fueled nationwide protests calling for an end to police violence in Black communities.
