Authorities Identify Suspect In Deadly Shooting Of Memphis Cop

In the wake of the fatal shooting of a Memphis police officer, officials have released the alleged suspect’s identity, CNN reports.

Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong identified the shooter as 29-year-old  Tremaine Wilbourn. The shooting occurred Saturday evening around 9:18 p.m., when Police Officer Sean Bolton noticed a car was illegally parked in southeast Memphis. Armstrong believes Bolton interrupted a marijuana purchase between Wilbourn and the driver of the vehicle. “A struggle ensued, ending when the passenger shot Bolton multiple times. Both the driver and the suspect fled,” according to CNN.

The Officer was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. He was 33-years-old.

Armstrong said the suspect will be charged with first-degree murder once captured. He is considered armed and dangerous.

“You can be assured that we will continue to pursue this suspect, and we will exhaust all means until he is in custody,” he said. “Last night, we lost not only an officer, but a great man, a dedicated servant to our community, and a family member,” said Armstrong.

The driver of the vehicle turned himself in and was released with no charges. Police have issued a $10,000 reward for Wilbourn’s capture.

This is the third officer who has died in Memphis in the last four years.
