Alabama Man Dies In Police Custody After Being Pepper-Sprayed

Authorities are trying to determine how an Alabama man who was arrested Friday night died after being handcuffed and pepper-sprayed by police.

Police arrested the Tuscaloosa man, identified as Anthony Dwayne Ware, after a neighbor called law enforcement to report the 35-year-old was sitting on the front porch with a firearm. When police responded to the call and arrived at the home, Ware allegedly fled.

During the chase, police pepper-sprayed Ware and handcuffed him.

“Mr. Ware had an active warrant that had been verified for attempting to elude police,” Tuscaloosa police Assistant Chief Ronnie Dunn said.

“Officers chased him into the woods, and when the officers caught up to him, he resisted arrest,” Dunn said.

It was while the police, with a handcuffed Ware, were walking out of the woods, that the man collapsed. Officers performed CPR, CNN writes, but Ware was pronounced dead a short while later.

His death is being investigated by the Tuscaloosa Police Department. Video of the incident will be released to the public “as soon as the Tuscaloosa County homicide investigators say it can be released without hindering the ongoing investigation,” Dunn told CNN.
