The Kentucky State Thoroughbreds beat the Central State Marauders 31-24 in the Circle City Classic Saturday. Since their first meeting in 1947, the two teams has had a longstanding rivalry and have met each other 55 times, with the Thoroughbreds winning 19 games, the Marauders winning 35 games and one tie. Kentucky Senior and Running Back Jacquise Lockett, the team’s best-kept secret and obvious offensive pick, was a standout player having rushed 243 of Kentucky State’s 268 rushing yards; His unfailing juggernaut performance helped drive the team’s seventh consecutive win against Central State.
The Circle City Classic, held at the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis IN, is an annual event that pushes to increase enrollment at HBCUs through college scholarships awarded to youth and young adults. There is also a spirited parade held in Downtown Indianapolis where both schools’ marching bands and auxiliary teams showcase their talent(s) alongside several other community dance groups and local black Greek-lettered organizations. Additionally, recording artist and “R&B Divas” star Keke Wyatt served as this year’s grand marshal.
