Robbie Tolan, Supporters Call for Federal Trial of Bellaire Officer
(HOUSTON) — Now that the U.S. Supreme Court has reinstated a lawsuit former Bellaire High School baseball star Robbie Tolan filed against the police officer who shot him back in 2008, his supporters are calling for a federal trial.
Tolan spoke publicly Monday — the first time since the high court issued it’s unanimous decision. Tolan said the decision is historic.
“This is bigger than Trayvon Martin. This is bigger than George Davis,” he said.
Tolan was shot on his porch of his parents’ home on New Years Eve 2008. Ofc. Jeffrey Cotton accidentally keyed in the wrong license plate number, which showed the car he was driving was stolen.
Congressman Al Green also spoke at the press conference, which was held at The Power Center in southwest Houston on Monday:
Green and Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee said they will ask the justice department to prosecute Cotton in federal court. In a state trial, Cotton was found not guilty.
