Jeffrey Osborne’s Awesome First Job in the Music Biz
On “Throwback Tuesday,” Roland Martin sat down with singer Jeffrey Osborne. The soulful crooner opened up about his career, relationship with his fans and his, perhaps, surprising big break into the music business.
Osborne described going to see the legendary O’Jays in concert as a teenager and noticing their sleepy drummer. He says, a chance meeting later with lead singer Eddie Levert led him to ask for a job replacing the drummer. According to Osborne, Levert was reluctant at first because of his age but eventually let the 15-year-old join the O’Jays on tour as their official drummer. It was his first job and earliest exposure to the music industry.
“It was unbelievable. That was the greatest experience ever. That’s what motivated me to become an entertainer,” Osborne said.
