Mayor Bloomberg: ‘Shoot First’ Laws Need To Go

Stand Your Ground laws across the country have a vocal opponent in New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, according to The Huffington Post

In response to the recent acquittal of George Zimmerman, Bloomberg released a statement on Sunday, saying that “Shoot First” laws, as laws like Stand Your Ground tend to be called, need to be dismantled.

“Sadly, all the facts in this tragic case will probably never be known But one fact has long been crystal clear: ‘shoot first’ laws like those in Florida … encourage deadly confrontations by enabling people to shoot first and argue ‘justifiable homicide’ later,” Bloomberg said in his Sunday statement.

Bloomberg, himself a staunch opponent of Stand Your Ground laws that are currently in place in 24 states, has been actively protesting said laws in the wake of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin’s death last year.
