Four-Star Army Gen. Dennis Via Becomes Highest Ranking Signal Corps Officer Since WWII
Already having his name added to the annals of history as the sixth African-American four-star general of the U.S. Army, Gen. Dennis Via (pictured) has achieved another milestone by becoming the highest ranking officer within the renowned Signal Corps.

After attaining the rank of general on Aug. 7, Via, a Virginia native, was named as the commander of the Army Material Command (AMC) a week later. Via’s promotion makes him only the second Army officer to achieve this feat since World War II, reports the Afro-American.

As head of the AMC, Via’s duties include overseeing the Army’s technological and material development arm. This also includes having a say in the development and testing of rations, weapons, vehicles and any other devices and apparatuses the Army will provide to its soldiers.

Along with the AMC job, Via’s top ranking as part of the Signal Corps signifies that he will also have a hand in how the Army handles communications on and off the field. The Signal Corps are a key component of communication during warfare and other important military operations.
