Sudan Journalist Jailed For Reporting Alleged Rape
KHARTOUM — Sudanese journalist Fatima Ghazali has been sentenced to one month in prison on Tuesday for writing an article about the alleged rape of an activist by security forces.
Sudan’s constitution guarantees journalists freedom of speech, however, many have been detained without charge and papers have faced censorship.
Ghazali was given the choice to pay a fine of 2,000 Sudanese pounds, or be jailed. She chose to be jailed.

The sentence against Fatima Ghazali is the first ruling after state prosecutors launched charges against several local journalists for writing about the alleged rape of a female activist after an anti-government protest earlier this year.
Sudan’s security forces have categorically denied the rape allegations.
Sudan has a history of stringent rulings, jailing a journalist in 2009 for wearing trousers.
