Court Rules Chicago Fire Department Must Hire 100 Black Firefighters
Court Order! Chi. Fire Department Must Hire 100 Black Firefighters
CHICAGO, Ill. — A federal appeals court has ruled the City of Chicago must hire more than 100 African-American firefighters to compensate for past hiring discrimination.
The ruling is the latest development in a fight over the department’s 1995 entrance exam. Thousands of people sued the city, saying the test favored white applicants.
The city may also be on the hook for tens of millions of dollars in payments to other individuals who applied for firefighter jobs in the 90s but cannot take them now.
