Haitian President To Stay In Office For 3 Months Past Term
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Haitian President Rene Preval will stay in office as his country chooses a successor.
Preval Chief of Staff Fritz Longchamp says the president will stay three months past the end of his term, telling The Associated Press in an interview on Monday that Preval will leave May 14.
Preval’s term had been scheduled to end Monday but a runoff election to replace him won’t take place until March 20.
An emergency law passed after last year’s earthquake allowed him to extend his term because his 2006 inauguration was delayed.
